2014-2015 Teachers of the Year

2014-2015 Commerce Primary Teacher of the Year & Commerce City Schools Teacher of the Year - Mrs. Christie Barker

C. BarkerMrs. Barker earned her Bachelor of Science from Georgia College & State University in 2001.  In 2004, she completed her Master of Education in Special Education, and in 2008, Mrs. Barker completed a Master of Education in Educational Leadership.  Mrs. Barker will complete her Specialist in Education from Georgia College and State University in 2016.

Mrs. Barker has been teaching since 2002.  She began teaching at Commerce Primary School in 2012.  Mrs. Barker has taught special education in Columbia County and Monroe County.  In Columbia County, Mrs. Barker served as the Autism Facilitator from 2010-2012.

2014-2015 Commerce Elementary Teacher of the Year- Mrs. Lynnly Drinkard

L. DrinkardMrs. Drinkard earned her Bachelor of Science in Art Education from the University of Georgia in 1989.  She completed her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education in 1998 at Piedmont College. In 2005, Mrs. Drinkard completed her Education Specialist at Lincoln Memorial. 

Mrs. Drinkard began teaching in 1990.  Mrs. Drinkard has taught art at Commerce Primary, Commerce Elementary, Commerce Middle, and Commerce High.  She has been the art and music teacher at Commerce Primary and Commerce Elementary since 2005.  In 1995, Mrs. Drinkard was selected as STAR Teacher.

2014-2015 Commerce Middle Teacher of the Year- Mr. Steven Parker

S. ParkerMr. Parker earned his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Georgia in 2010.  From 2007-2011, Mr. Parker was a private music teacher.  During the 2010-2011 school year, Mr. Parker was a substitute elementary music teacher in Clarke County.  Mr. Parker began his teaching career in Commerce in 2011 where he has served as the band and chorus teacher at Commerce Middle and Commerce High Schools. 

During Mr. Parker’s tenure in Commerce, our band has earned Superior ratings at festivals and competitions.  The first band members earned admission to GMEA District Honor Band.  The competitive winter drumline/color guard units placed 1st and 7th in class in the SAPA Circuit (GA, AL, TN).  The concert band doubled enrollment at CMS and CHS, and the marching band membership has doubled.

2014-2015 Commerce High Teacher of the Year- Mr. Peter Reitz 

P. ReitzMr. Reitz earned his Bachelor of Science degree in English Education from the University of Georgia in 2008.  He completed his student teaching at CHS during the 2007-2008 school year.  In 2008, Mr. Reitz began teaching English at Commerce High School. 

During his tenure at CHS, Mr. Reitz has coached the academic team.  He is the sponsor of the Japanese culture club, and he is co-founder of the sci-fi/fantasy book club.  Mr. Reitz has been heavily involved with the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program since 2006.  He has served as a resident assistant, dorm director, director of resident life, and as a state-level interviewer for GHP. 

Mr. Reitz has been selected to present at the Georgia Conference for Teachers of English in 2008; 2011; 2012; and 2013.  In 2014, Mr. Reitz presented at The Journal of Language and Literacy Education Conference at UGA.  In 2014, Mr. Reitz had 44% of his students MEET on the Ninth Grade Literature/Composition EOCT and 51% of his students EXCEEDED.
